Google announces custom URLs for Google+

In another move to reduce the gap between features of Google+ and Facebook, Google recently announced they are rolling out custom URLs for Google+ profiles, rather than the current ones (for example: which are quite messy and unattractive. The new URLs are long overdue, with other social media platforms having had them for years, and once available to everyone will no doubt make Google+ more attractive for digital marketing. So far the URLs are only available to a select few people and businesses, but it’s a good start. Google posted: “While we're not quite ready for everyone to start claiming their own custom URLs, we plan to expand the availability over time, so stay tuned!” While a slow and steady process Google+ seems to be right on track for adding all the features users have been asking for, while their biggest competition, Facebook, continues to annoy users with compulsory changes, ‘improvements’, and over-the-top advertising. This is likely to be another helpful factor in influencing users across to Google+. Facebook still has roughly five times the users that Google+ does though, so the three big questions here are:

  1. Will Google+ overtake Facebook?
  2. If so, when?
  3. And last but not least, if Google+ does become the new social media superpower, will they follow in the footsteps of Facebook and MySpace by annoying users with mountains of ads and spam?

Only time will tell...
